NGSS Teacher Trainings

ISTA is teaming up with the Chicago Zoological Society to offer you some outstanding courses on NGSS implementation!

You will be immersed and engaged in classroom practices that will increase the impact of science in your classroom.

ISTA members receive a special rate for these classes, especially if you take all 3 in the series!   Optional graduate credit is also available.

ISTA will also offer a digital “Certificate of Completion” if you take the entire series of 3 classes for your professional portfolio!

To register or learn more about these classes ISTA and Brookfield Zoo are running, see below or go towww.czs.org/teacher-classes

WOW!  ISTA members get a 15% discount on June 18-21 session. Details below.

March 23 & 24: NGSS: Storylining

Presented by staff/members of the Illinois Science Teachers Association
Friday, March 23 (4:30 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.) and Saturday, March 24 (8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Building coherence around phenomena that exist in our world is critical to implementing a three-dimensional classroom. When students see how and why science ideas are relevant, they are more apt to be engaged and make sense of the world. Participants in this course will see how to plan their curricula by looking at the big picture and create lessons that build on one another. By developing storyline units, participants will help their students to connect traditionally isolated ideas, to make coherent connections.

April 6 & 7: NGSS: 3-Dimensional Assessment

Presented by staff/members of the Illinois Science Teachers Association
Friday, April 6 (4:30 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.) and Saturday, April 7 (8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Three-dimensional learning not only involves understanding science content, but also how to use the science practices and discover and apply the cross-cutting concepts. Effective assessment strategies must also involve all three of these dimensions. Participants will see models of three-dimensional assessments and better understand how to shift their assessment methods to obtain a deeper, richer look at student learning and performance.

June 18 - 21 Collaborating & Creating an NGSS Storyline

Presented by staff/members of the Illinois Science Teachers Association
Monday, June 18 through Thursday, June 21 (8:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. daily)

As an ISTA Active Member get your 15% discount for June 18-21  Use code ISTA15.

In this course, participants will engage in understanding the process of NGSS implementation through the creation of an NGSS storyline unit.  Through collaborative work over the course of this class, participants will design a phenomenon-driven investigation using the three dimensions as prescribed by the Next Generation Science Standards. Participants will gain greater confidence in their understanding by applying their knowledge of three-dimensional learning to build coherence within a carefully designed unit of instruction. This will enable more effective and engaging pedagogy as well as enhanced learning experience for students. Developing an understanding of how to build curriculum coherence around a central phenomenon will be a central focus.
